The 2019 Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open Presented by Prodiscus is set to take place this week

April 8, 2019

Jonesboro, ARK- The 2019 Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open Presented by Prodiscus is set to take place this week.  This is the third stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour and all is set for Jonesboro to be the center of the disc golf world for a week.  Professional and amateur disc golfers will compete during the three-day tournament on April 12 – 14.  The professionals will play three rounds on one of the longest courses on the Pro Tour located in southwest Jonesboro.

The growth from the inaugural Jonesboro Open in 2017 to this year is easily noted by looking at the number of players coming to town.  The professional side of the tournament has grown from 66 players to 157. The amateur side has grown from 77 to the maximum number of 144.  In total, 301 disc golfers from around the globe are converging on Jonesboro this week.

Many local, national and international companies have partnered with the tournament to enhance the efforts including the Jonesboro Play It Again Sports store, Prodiscus – a disc golf manufacturer in Finland, Centennial Bank, Buffalo Wild Wings, North Delta Engineering, Lost Pizza Co., Jonesboro Cycle & ATV, East Arkansas Broadcasters and KJNB.  Other support has been provided by Artents, Lyon’s NEA Trophy, Jonesboro Coca-Cola, Sunbelt Equipment Rental and the Jonesboro A&P Commission.

The players are excited to be in Jonesboro as it is quickly becoming a very popular stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour.  We need to show these players that we are just as happy for them to be here.  We need the community to come out and watch these men and women who are the very best on the planet play.  Jonesboro should be very proud to have them here and we need to make it known we want them back.

New this year is the partnership between the tournament and The Arkansas Pet Savers (TAPS).  TAPS is a local charitable organization dedicated to saving dogs and cats that are scheduled to be put down at local shelters.  Members of TAPS are serving as volunteers this week to help raise awareness and funds for their mission.

The week of festivities begins Thursday, April 11 with the North Delta Engineering Media Day to be held from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at Disc Side of Heaven.  This will be the best time for local media to interview some of the top players in the sport.  The evening will conclude with the Pro Player’s and Sponsor’s Dinner also sponsored by North Delta Engineering.

The Jonesboro Open is held at Disc Side of Heaven disc golf course, located just north of RidgePointe Country Club.  Competition will begin at 7:30 each morning and continue all day; the leaders will tee off at 3:30 each afternoon.  Saturday and Sunday will be the most spectator friendly as there will be games, food, vendors and plenty of world class competition to watch.  To learn more about how to be a part of the Jonesboro Open or for more detailed spectator information, simply log on to JonesboroOpen.com or email Brad Pietz at DiscSideofHeaven@gmail.com

JONESBORO OPEN CHAMPIONS PAIGE PIERCE AND RICKY WYSOCKI SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS

As the excitement and anticipation builds in preparation for the 3rd stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour, the  Play it Again Sports Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus, we have asked the back to back Champions of the two previous years, Ricky Wysocki and Paige Pierce, to share their thoughts with us about Disc Side of Heaven and the Jonesboro Open.

Paige Pierce:    When I first heard the Disc Golf Pro Tour was going to Jonesboro, Arkansas, honestly, I did not know what to think. I had never played in Jonesboro before nor had I heard anything about the golf there. I did know that there must be a good reason for Steve to want to have such a big event there though, so I was hopeful!

After my first round there I remember thinking how long the holes were and how rough the edges of the fairways were. I also remember being very thankful that a lawn mower company was a big sponsor of the event and thought that was very fitting ha. On a more serious note though, I enjoyed the mix of elevation and the few holes with the water features.

I am a huge fan of par four golf where you have to figure out where you want the disc to land and then have to essentially play a par three from there. It is a course that gives you the option to go for a big distance shot but still requires control. I was excited about that!

Mostly when I look back on the 2017 Jonesboro Open I think about the battle down to the last hole with Sarah Hokom. These are the moments I find the most passion in.

Looking back at 2018, the thing I remember most is the snow round!  None of us knew it was coming and then we woke up and boom! I was so excited to have such unique conditions. Although I am not a fan of playing in cold, it was very memorable and not to mention made for some amazing photos!  The single shot that sticks out in my mind from 2018 was in the first round on hole 3 I went live on Facebook and threw my brand new Lucid X Convict. It was the first time I even saw the mold at all and I had them delivered to Jonesboro that morning. I was excited about the release as I was told they would be just like my current signature disc the lucid convict, but that they would be able to hold a bit more snap so even though it was mid tournament and I hadn’t thrown it even once yet I thought it would be a fun idea. I put it to 25 ft away pin high on the right and then made the putt!

As far as a favorite hole on the course, I really love hole 18, it is super long and demanding with lots of options and the initial gap you have to hit is so intimidating! Brad saved the hardest one for last and I love that feeling of knowing that anything can happen on that final hole of the tournament. It keeps you on your toes and really makes every hole up until that point that much more critical as you will need to get every stroke possible just in case things go south on 18.

I just want to give a shout out to the entire operation at Disc Side of Heaven. As I mentioned, it wasn’t a course I had even heard of and now it stands out as not only a great course but also as a great event! Brad and crew really take care of every little detail and are very dedicated to making the entire experience the best it can be for everyone attending. I cannot wait to see what 2019 has in store!

Ricky Wysocki: My first memory of Disc Side of Heaven was the beautiful rolling hills and great complement of course design to utilize the hills to make the course have a great visual appeal as well as a great challenge.  Also as a top player some courses you step up to just fit your eye and this is one of them.  This course requires you to control your angles extremely well coming into the sloped basket placements. I feel like I have very good control of my speed and angle allowing me to land soft and with the right angle on the greens to get a lot of birdie looks and let my putting take over the tournament.

My favorite hole is hole 9 it has all the elements of a great challenging tee shot, challenging approach and a fast tough green. Every element of the hole from the first to the last shot prove a different kind of challenge.

It’s funny my memory about the first Jonesboro Open Championship in 2017 is actually how challenging a couple of the holes were. I remember specifically hole 10 being a huge challenge for me and I don’t think I birdied it at all the whole event.

In 2018 I remember the weather being really cold. This actually sparked me because I usually seem to play well in inclement weather. I enjoy the challenge of not only braving the elements but also being able to perform at a high level. I feel a huge confidence boost anytime I win an event the previous year and come back to repeat.  I feel a huge confidence boost over the field knowing I have what it takes to win and just knowing that if I play to the best of my ability I can win again.

I am pumped about going back to Jonesboro. I’ve had a lot of good memories, obviously winning back to back events there, but also being featured on some local radio stations and treating the Disc Golf event like a mainstream sport in the area, which it deserves to be.

So just looking back I remember loving the challenge and wanting to come back to conquer the course again and especially hole 10.

The 2019 Play it Again Sports Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus action begins on Friday April 12 at 7:30 am at Disc Side of Heaven. FIELD FOR THE THE TOURNAMENT NEARING CAPACITY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 20, 2019

JONESBORO, AR: The 2019 Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus has announced the field for the tournament is nearing capacity. As of March 19, a full field of 124 players have registered in the Men’s Professional Open (MPO) division. This is the first time in the three-year history of the event that any division has filled. In the inaugural Jonesboro Open in 2017, 54 MPO competitors took part, and the field nearly doubled to 104 last year. Now, with more than three weeks to go, players are signing up for the Wait List in hopes that someone fails to make the trip.

The Female Professional Open (FPO) division is also closing in on capacity. There are currently 27 FPO players registered with just five spots remaining. The FPO division has increased from 12 in year one to 15 last year.

The Amateur division has also surpassed last year’s number with more than three weeks remaining. There are currently 108 Amateurs signed up to play, traveling to Jonesboro from 13 different states including every border state as well as Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Amateur field included 77 players in 2017 and 103 last year, and the capacity for that division is 144.

Tournament Director Brad Pietz said he is pleased with the way everything is coming together.

“We have had a plan in place for several years now and it feels like the plan is gaining a tremendous amount of momentum this year,” Pietz said. “Our goal is for the Jonesboro Open to become an economic engine for the city, and this year looks like it will show a real impact.”

If all three divisions reach capacity, there will be 300 disc golfers in the city from across the country and the globe for nearly a week of practice and competition.

The Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open will take place at Disc Side of Heaven, near RidgePointe Country Club and Craighead Forest Park. It is the third stop on the 2019 Disc Golf Pro Tour. This year’s dates are April 12-14 and proceeds from the tournament will go to The Arkansas Pet Savers organization.

JONESBORO OPEN ANNOUNCES TWO MORE NAMING SPONSORS

MARCH 5, 2019

JONESBORO, AR – The Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus, the third stop on the 2019 Disc Golf Pro Tour, has announced partnerships with Lost Pizza Co. and Jonesboro Cycle & ATV as new Naming Sponsors.

The putting green area will be known as the “Lost Pizza Putting Green” while the welcome area will become the “Jonesboro Cycle & ATV Welcome Tent”.

Because of the event’s growth, tournament organizers decided to move the putting green away from the first tee box and to a more-isolated area. It will now be behind the Festival of the Flying Discs and give the competitors a quieter place to warm up.  The area will be marked by signs indicating the Lost Pizza Putting Green. Naming the putting green will give Lost Pizza, located at 906 Southwest Drive in Jonesboro, a chance to be in front of every professional and amateur player in the field.

Jonesboro Cycle & ATV, located at 2800 Fair Park Blvd, has been involved with the tournament since year one by donating various 4-wheel drive vehicles for the tournament staff to use. This year they have agreed to be the Naming Sponsor for the Welcome Tent, which is where every player and spectator will enter and leave during the tournament. Jonesboro Cycle & ATV will also continue to supply the tournament staff with vehicles during the week.

Tournament Director Brad Pietz said the latest agreements are “the icing on the cake” in terms of sponsorships for 2019.

“During the 2018 tournament, I had 10-to-12 different people seek me out and say they wanted to be involved next year. These two companies both mentioned to us last year that they wanted to be more involved in 2019,” Pietz said. “This event is doing great things for Jonesboro, and to have the number of sponsors we have this year is a true testament that others feel the same way.”

This is the fourth season of the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the third year for the Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus. The tournament will be held April 12-14 at the Disc Side of Heaven course near RidgePointe Country Club and at Craighead Forest Park.

Jonesboro Open adds Play It Again Sports As Title Sponsor and Additional Added Cash

Jonesboro, Arkansas: The Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus and Play It Again Sports Jonesboro have announced a partnership for the 2019 Jonesboro Open. Play It Again Sports has agreed to be the Title Sponsor of the 2019 Jonesboro Open, changing the name to Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open.

Play It Again Sports Jonesboro, located at 3407 E Highland across from the Mall at Turtle Creek, is a new and used sporting goods store that focuses on All Those Who Play. They also carry the largest supply of disc golf discs and disc golf supplies in Northeast Arkansas and their staff is very knowledgeable of the countless brands and molds of discs they sell. Play It Again Sports Jonesboro has been a big supporter of Disc Side of Heaven and the Jonesboro Open from the very beginning and are now taking the next step in their involvement in the community with this title sponsorship.

Becoming a bigger part of the Jonesboro Open has been a plan of new owner Cameron Campbell since he purchased the store last year. Campbell has this to say regarding the partnership, “Even before the purchase of the store I was amazed at the growth of the sport in our area and how amazing it was to have Jonesboro on the Disc Golf Pro Tour map! When I got in the store, it just made sense to offer up any support I could. When this opportunity presented, it just fit! We are extremely excited about this partnership. Not only will this be good for our business to be on board with, but it’s important to me to give back. Our community has supported the store for over 10 years and the disc golf patrons have been among the strongest supporters, so I felt I owed it to those customers and our community to give back my support. We look forward to making this ‘THE Stop’ on the tour!”

Tournament Director Brad Pietz is thrilled to have them on board as the new title sponsor. “Play It Again Sports has been a big part of disc golf in Jonesboro for more than ten years. They supported me when I had a crazy dream of opening a professional caliber course six years ago and they continue that support now with Cameron involved.” Pietz continued, “Having someone like Cameron and his family involved in the Jonesboro Open is exactly what it is going to take to make this tournament one of the best in the country. We have come a long way, but we are striving to get bigger and better every year.”

The Play It Again Sports sponsorship will benefit both the Pro side of the tournament and the Amateur side. With this title sponsorship, the Pro side added purse is going to increase from $12,000 to $15,000. This gives the Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open the second highest amount of added cash on the 2019 Disc Golf Pro Tour. The Amateur Player’s Pack is going to be full of items from Matt Loyd and Dynamic Discs originally including two brand new Dynamic Discs, one of which is a new release. This partnership is going to allow a third new disc from Dynamic and a tournament stamped disc from Prodiscus; each player will receive four brand new discs just for signing up to play.

This is the fourth season of the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the third year for the Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus. The tournament will be held on April 12-14, 2019 at the Disc Side of Heaven Championship Course near RidgePointe Country Club.

Jonesboro Open adds North Delta Engineering and Centennial Bank as Naming Sponsors

Jonesboro, Arkansas: The Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus has announced two more Naming Sponsors in Centennial Bank and North Delta Engineering. This is the third consecutive year that Centennial Bank has been a major supporter of the Jonesboro Open and the first year for North Delta Engineering.

Centennial Bank’s headquarters are in Arkansas and they have 78 branches throughout the state. Additional Centennial Bank locations can be found in Alabama, Florida and New York. The main Player’s
Tent at the Jonesboro Open will once again be known as the Centennial Bank Player’s Tent. This is where all players and spectators will be able to sit and enjoy a bite to eat and watch the action on the big screen TVs. Tournament Director Brad Pietz had this to say regarding the sponsorship, “Centennial Bank was the
first Naming Sponsor we secured in 2017 and they continue to show support to our event. This year, I am hopeful to have two TVs under the Centennial Bank Player’s Tent; one showing the live action from
Jonesboro and the other showing the live action from the other ‘little’ golf tournament that weekend in Augusta, Georgia.”
North Delta Engineering will add their name to the Media Day and the Player’s Dinner. North Delta Engineering may be a new business in the Jonesboro area, but they are not new to the Jonesboro Open.
Owner Jordan Lane has been an integral part of the tournament from the very beginning and is now happy to be able to lend more support to the tournament. “I have traveled across the country playing in disc golf tournaments for many years. To see what we have been able to build in Jonesboro is truly a dream come true.” said Lane. “We have built this tournament from the ground up and there is a lot of momentum right now, I hope others join me to help build this bigger and better each year.”

With the earlier announcement of Buffalo Wild Wings and now Centennial Bank and North Delta
Engineering, there are only three Naming Sponsorships remaining. If you are interested in being an
essential part of the Jonesboro Open, please call Brad Pietz at 870-336-0347.
This is the fourth season of the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the third year for the Jonesboro Open presented by

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JONESBORO OPEN ADDS MORE SPACE FOR FPO

February 7, 2019

Officials from the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the 2019 Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus have announced a slight change in the format.  The Female Professional Open (FPO) division has reached capacity with more than two months remaining before the tournament causing officials to add more tee times to the FPO field.

Play was originally set to begin at 7:54 a.m. (Central) but has now been bumped up to 7:30 a.m. to satisfy demand in the FPO division.  In 2017 the inaugural Jonesboro Open had just 12 women compete for the championship; in 2018 the field grew to 15. Now, still two months away from tournament time, 24 women from fourteen different states and one from Canada have entered the competition.  The original capacity was 24, but the Jonesboro Open has now expanded to 32.

“What a wonderful problem to have?!” exclaimed Steve Dodge, Director of the Disc Golf Pro Tour.  “This is very exciting for the third year.” Brad Pietz, Tournament Director of the Jonesboro Open added, “Last season we maxed out at 104 on the men’s side and expanded it to 124 this year.  I hoped we would get close to 24 on the ladies’ side, but to get there this quickly is very exciting indeed.”

This is the fourth season of the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the third year for the Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus.  The tournament will be held April 12-14, 2019, at the Disc Side of Heaven Championship Course near RidgePointe Country Club.

JONESBORO OPEN AND THE ARKANSAS PET SAVERS TEAM UP

February 3, 2109 – JONESBORO, AR – The Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus, the third stop on the 2019 Disc Golf Pro Tour, has announced a partnership with The Arkansas Pet Savers (TAPS) organization to raise funds and awareness for the charitable organization.  The mission of The Arkansas Pet Savers is to pull death row dogs about to be euthanized.  Unlike other pet rescue organizations, Pet Savers does not have a permanent facility anywhere in the state of Arkansas.   Members of the group use their own homes and resources to foster dogs until either a family adopts the dogs, or they are transported to other parts of the country that need available family pets.

Arkansas Pet Savers was established in 2014 but began expanding their footprint in 2017 and has active members and volunteers across the state.  The event coordinator, Kendra Wattelet, had this to say about the partnership, “The Arkansas Pet Savers are honored to collaborate with the 2019 Jonesboro Open. This is a fantastic event spotlighting the city of Jonesboro and will bring National, as well as, International attention to Arkansas. It is our hope that the success of this event will bring a greater awareness of homeless pets within our region.“  Wattelet continued, “Knowing that I played a part in saving so many abandoned pets is the greatest feeling in the world. It can definitely be sad and overwhelming but when I look into the eyes of a dog we have pulled from death’s door, it is 100% worth it.

I want other people to know that being involved in rescue doesn’t mean just fostering and donating, there are so many other ways to help and I invite anyone who is interested in helping to contact our page.”

Over the years TAPS has purchased a cargo van and configured it to hold over twenty kennels.  Once all options to find a local forever home have been exhausted, members will drive the van to cities like Kansas City,  St. Louis, Nashville, Palatine IL, Bellingham MA, East Hartford CT, Monticello and Minnetoka Minnesota where there are more families looking for pets than dogs to meet that demand.   Wattelet stated in 2018 there were 25 trips in the van saving 471 dogs and cats in the process. They are on pace to save over 800 pets in 2019 as the group has already made six trips saving 97 dogs and cats this year.

Tournament Director Brad Pietz says this has been a goal for the tournament from the beginning, stating, “I want the Jonesboro Open to be more than just a tournament, I want it to be an event that the entire community can rally around and grow each year.  I want the proceeds of the event to go to an organization that does a service in the community and this seems like a perfect fit.”  Pietz continued, “Many disc golfers across the county have ‘disc dogs’ that go to the course with them every time; and I would guess the vast majority are rescues.  My family adopted a rescue dog about five years ago and she goes with me as much as possible and loves going to the disc golf course!”

Members of The Arkansas Pet Savers are going to work before the tournament selling sponsorships and during the tournament as volunteers at the course.  After the tournament, a portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated back to TAPS to help continue their mission.  This is the fourth season of the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the third year for the Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus.  The tournament will be held on April 12-14, 2019 at the Disc Side of Heaven Championship Course near RidgePointe Country Club.

For more information go to JonesboroOpen.com or to learn more about TAPS search for them on Facebook.

Buffalo Wild Wings Partners with Jonesboro Open

Jonesboro, Arkansas: The Jonesboro Open and the Jonesboro location of Buffalo Wild Wings are excited to announce a partnership for the 2019 Jonesboro Open.  Buffalo Wild Wings has agreed to be the official host of the 2019 Jonesboro Open Player’s Party.  In 2018 they were an Eagle Sponsor and were a part of the Fly Mart and hole-in-one competition.  From that moment they wanted to be more involved have now become the Naming Sponsor of the Player’s Party.

The Buffalo Wild Wings Player’s Party will take place on Friday night, April 12 beginning around 7:30.  The putting competition preliminaries will take place on the patio and the first round’s telecast of the Jonesboro Open will be replayed on several of their 64 big screen TVs.  Buffalo Wild Wings invites all professional players, amateur players and spectators that come to town to the Player’s Party.  It is open to everyone and there will be no cover charge to get in.

Tournament Director Brad Pietz says this is just one more item on the checklist of the tournament plan, “To get the local businesses to start to buy in to what we are bringing to town is very exciting.”  Pietz said.  “In 2018 we had 222 players from 33 different states and three foreign countries in town for a week.  I am very happy to see the tournament making an economic impact to the City of Jonesboro.”

Chris Reed, from the Jonesboro restaurant, had this to say regarding the partnership, “Buffalo Wild Wings strives to be the place for our community to come together to enjoy sports. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, the seasoned pro, or a child bouncing around the crowd to meet their favorite athlete.  The Jonesboro Open gives us the opportunity to be just what we were meant to be.”  Reed continued, “For the second year in a row, the tournament has let us be a sponsor of the event that brings participants and spectators together.  We are excited to be a partner and keep great sporting events coming into our community.”

If you want to watch the Jonesboro Open live on TV instead of in person at Disc Side of Heaven, Buffalo Wild Wings plans to show all live coverage of the tournament the entire weekend on several of their big screen TVs.

This is the fourth season of the Disc Golf Pro Tour and the third year for the Jonesboro Open presented by Prodiscus.  The tournament will be held on April 12-14, 2019 at the Disc Side of Heaven Championship Course near RidgePointe Country Club.
